Blogroll

colemanm.org

In the early days of blogging it was common to have a “blogroll” in the sidebar to link to friends, colleagues, and your favorite sites, with a focus on other blogs rather than just your favorite websites or products. So I created one with my favorite internet destinations, with all flavors of topics I’m interested in.

I’m going to do this again, too.

Closing the microblogging Slack

It is not sustainable for me to work on new Micro.blog features at the current pace as well as be responsive in Slack. If someone has a question about Micro.blog, I want to point them to the best place to get a thorough answer, and that’s email.

Slack also has a couple problems:

  • It’s a proprietary platform that doesn’t fit well with our goals for Micro.blog. For example, you can’t have your own domain name for Slack, which makes migrating away very difficult.
  • Because the search is limited to only recent messages, it is less useful as a resource to new members.

Totally agree with this. Manton has been great on support, but I wondered if it was sustainable. And more importantly, I very much agree with the openness argument.

The Revolt of the Public in 10 Minutes

Author Martin Gurri posted this quick 10 minute summary of his book The Revolt of the Public.

His insights connect information dissemination, institutions, and authority — the public expects unrealistic levels of service and expertise from institutions, while institutions also promise far more than they’re capable of delivering.

This is going onto my reading list.
