Ok, bit of a false alarm. Prompted by Curtis, I built my own testing keyboard and confirmed that it doesn’t get access to text unless it’s the active keyboard. 🤔 I say that because I have to assume Apple is smart enough to make sure keyboards can't run in the BG, and also can't insert gesture recognizers onto other keyboards.
